More on Crop Insurance
Greg Roth
With another drought this summer, unfortunately there will likely be numerous crop insurance claims for corn by our members. It appears that the signup for crop insurance has increased in our state during the last several years. Much of this has been due to policy changes in crop insurance that were instituted at the urging of PMCGA and other groups around the state. Also, increased awareness of strategies for using crop insurance probably played a role as well. Special thanks goes out to our board members Dan Wolf, Woody Kyper and Mike Kuhns for participating in some of the PDA sponsored crop insurance policy workshops during the last two years. Some of you may remember Gene Gantz from Risk Management Strategies who spoke on this topic at our 2000 Corn and Soybean Conference.
Several members have expressed a concern that we still are at a disadvantage with some of the Crop Revenue Coverage (CRC) Programs because the crop revenue can only be insured using a CBOT price and often our price and revenue is substantially higher. We are currently supporting some efforts to change this policy so that the entire crop revenue stream can be insured. We’ll keep you posted on this development as well.
